theres a good chance it is a coil, or plugs.. how many km on the car?

also remove the top cover and while the car is running lift one coil at a time off the plugs and see which one makes it die..

alternatively get a ford dealer to do a power balance test with an IDS or PDS and go from there

My brother has a BA falcon in Darwin. He had it serviced up there and they steam cleaned the engine, a few weeks later he drove down to Victoria and noticed higher fuel consumption along with missing. I recomended Coffey Ford in Dandenong. It was 2 coils and the ECU had to be re-mapped. Basically the water from the cleaning ruined the 2 coils. He was only charged $70 dollars and its running better than when he first bought it.

here's what id be checking

run a cylinder power balance test (need PDS/WDS) to do it, and then check coil/injector etc on the suspect cylinder and you'll find a problem somewhere.

also. clean the throttle body and d/c the battery for one minute should fix most of the rough idle issues guys seem to be having..

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem, but Ill describe what its doing... if anyone can add to the subject would be good.

Under load and from about 2000 rpm the engine stutters/putts, Im not sure if its missing or what... but it struggles and feels sluggish... when it hits about 4500rpm there is a sharp and large increase in power. Im not sure if the stuttering stops as the engine is reving too fast at that point anyway.

If I take it down to 4th gear (manual override in auto) and driving slow and floor it, it is very noticeable as it stutters... eventually the ecu takes over and puts it into DRIVE and it flashes on the instrument cluster.

The funny thing is it only does it UNDER LOAD... if reving in neutral it doesnt seem to show any signs.

I dont have any diagnostic equipment at home, and I keep her maintained very well (new plugs, new oil, fuel and air filters, coolant) Im trying to think what could be causing it???

Cheers guys

Luke

Cleaned out the air filter and dropped some injector cleaner in it yersterday and the same problem still persists.

Took it into Ford who were kind enough to hook it up to the dianostic system. My ecu is returning the engine is running to LEAN.

They pointed towards the fuel pump might be on its way out... anything thing else?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks guys

have heard that the soliniods that advance and retard the cam phasing can gunk up. means they get a bit stuck and such. theres an ECU firmware flash ford were doing to do a purge at the start up of the car

Could even be a blocked cat mate, how long ago did you change your fuel filter, you may have a bad batch of fuel in it and blocked the fuel filter..

In my mates evo last week it was pinging, so first thing i went for was the fuel pump, its the cheapest fix so i changed it and its perfect now.. the fuel that came out of it was black..

your fuel pump couls be on its way out, check if it stutters with a full tank as well...

I dont tend to run my tank any lower than about 1/3 empty and I changed the fuel filter only about a month or two ago. I did a fuel flow test and that pumped out 300cc in 10sec so thats according to specs... I cant test pressure though. It still putts around with a full tank...

I would agree with the timing though, thats what it seems like... Ill have to look more into it.

Cheers fellas.
