I have a 97 taurus with a 3litre v6 with 130 000 km, and I am stumped! Ive just replaced the thermostat hoping to get more heat in the cabin because it took sooo long to warm up. The engine heats up just fine, the blower motor is fine but its pushing only mild heat. The on conclusion that I can establish is that a door that controls the hot or cold air is not shutting tight. Could it be the vacuum hoses or something electrical I dont know where to start. My car is in Canada where winter is on its way.
I hope to hear from somebody soon
thanks for the help

Dan

umm not sure on your car but i had the same on mine a mate told me to cut teh baseplate off teh thermostat as the rad can be slighlty blocked so the thermostat has to open more to keep the car at the correct temp and blocks off the coolant flow to the heater

I'm guessing you're talking about the heating inside the car?

i dont know how your car works, but mine (xf) has a vacuum controlled heater tap which cuts the coolant flow through the heater core.. perhaps yours (or whatever they use instead) is jammed half open ? or doesnt open properly ?

just a thought..

or has rusted itself up.

Depending if hte tap is vacuum operated or motorised (i'm assuming its got climate control), set the heater to maximum heat but the fan on minimum, turn the motor off.

Unplug the hoses going into the cabin from the engine side (not the interior heater core side) and get a garden hose from your house tap and force a fair whack of water through each hose, one at a time. If you're lucky, there's an obstruction and it will blast out as you reverse flush the heater core. If you're unlucky, the heater core will burst and you'll get water in the driver & passenger footwells. If the heater core bursts, it needed replacing anyway...
