just fit a oil catch can if your worried about oil vapour from the PCV valve reducing your octane fuel rating and leaving oil deposits in the bottom of the BBM.

I fitted one a while back after seeing the oil in the manifold after a gasket replacement.

You really need to remove the BBM, in order to give it a proper clean out. You will also need to get under it to tighten the 10mm manifold bolts, the last bottom bolt is in a real prick of a spot.

I think best way is to remove it. But you could try removing the throttle body and the top half of the BBM to clean out some oil deposits...it'll just be hard though to remove the grime against gravity.

Also if you plan on removing the top half, you'll need to find yourself a spare plenum gasket that is sandwiched between the top and bottom half.

Hope that helps.

taking it out of the car, how would i go about cleaning it then?

its shaping up that the gaskets gone. so while its off i thought id give it a good scrub.

not really sure how to get in there real deep. if i do this, i want to make it the cleanest possible without needing to send it off.

Mate, once its off its pretty easy to clean.. Get yourself a paintbrush and some petrol. wash over all the grime, and try to make the bulk of it run out while it's still wet.
The top half is easier to get to than the bottom because of the bends..
But be patient, it'll be worth it.
If you have an air compressor it'll make getting the s**t out even easier.. messier, but easier..

Just make sure you have a seperate dish to pour the petrol into so that when the dish gets dirty, you can pour some clean petrol in..

You can also get industrial cleaning solvents that are petrol based and will do a slightly better job, but not everyone has contacts in the aviation industry (or similar) so petrol is similarly good, and you'll only need a litre or 2 anyway..

You'll be surprised how much grime will come out, and more surprised in the result of your labour..

Cheers,
MaTTe

I recently opened and closed my bbm for other reasons, and on the spur of the moment decided to just re-use the existing metal gasket. What is the chance this will work okay?

you will soon now if it doesn't, i just siliconed mine back up.

mind you i still think the cap screws that bolt into the head are the gayest thing about the bbm specially threading stainless into ally in a high heat invironment < metallurgically incorrect.

also can't you suck the oil out with a rag ? good old capillary action. i'd give it two weeks before your all full of oil again though. i have a catch can n still get oil in there. not pooling but still get oil in there.

at the end of the day your not going to fix a miss or gain 10kw from doing so though. the auto is a mechanical object, usually only mechanical items affect it's performance. thanks to modern science your computer is calibrated to deal with changes like this and accomodate for them. which is why resetting your computer as many people may disagree is deffinately the wrong thing to do if you have a drama. it only recalibrates the computer to think the problem is normal and it will start from there making it harder to operate in it's pre-programmed peripherals... or something lol.

What are the symptoms if it doesn't seal?

The hex cap screws were tight to undo.
