Drive my XH 6cyl around today, no dramas. Went home, 20 minutes later it wont start and its stuck in the carpark. It just cranks but won't start. The fuel pump runs fine and cuts off, I go to start it, it might fire once or twice, then dies. Won't start with any amount of throttle and once it fires that first time it just keeps cranking and cranking.

No obvious fuel leaks, plenty of fuel, battery is good, all electronics seem to be fine, checking for spark now but I need to get it going for work tomorrow!!

Any help would be great.

When was the last time you put fuel in it? Are you sure its got fuel in it? If so mabe its dirty fuel.
Also ty hitting the BCM while starting her?
If the BCM has been done, I had the same problem and it was dirty fuel. Get a spray bottle and fill it with fuel. While someone starts the car, squirt fuel direcly into the throttle body and if it starts keep it running with the spray bottle till it runs stable by itself. Then either dilute the fuel thats in the tank by adding more and maybe a cleaner additive or drain the tank

It has half a tank of fuel, fuel is Opal (in Alice Springs) and it is flowing freely from the filter outlet. Filled it full last weekend. Tried that start ya bastard stuff into the throttle body, no help.

Spark plugs were dirty but cleaned them all and no help. Checked for spark on plug 6 and there is none. Spark plugs are also dry immediately after I was cranking it.

Does anyone know why i wouldn't be getting spark all of a sudden? could the coil pack in it like this? I called Repco and they can't get one till next week if it is the coil.

I'm having a go with the BCM now.

Thanks for the help.

Tried tapping and knocking the BCM but with no luck. No spark on cyl 1 either. Checking the coil and all the other areas for loose wires now.

i think this could be the culprit. the resistance on the tfi plug is not matching that listed in the service manual.

coolant has been leaking around the heater pipe on the thermostat housing, and green stuff is all over the TFI plug.

I have never swapped a TFI. Is it an easy job to do?

just a thought, if there is coolant on the tfi, is there coolant on the dizzy cap and leads??
sometimes moisture or water on the dizzy cap or leads can also kill spark..

just goes to show how fragile car setups are. Funny how little s**t can cause a huge problem.
Try Ebay for the tfi, might get there before the auto place and for cheaper.
Id drop the dizzy cap off her if it got a dizzy ( dont know with Xh's) and inspect it like Troyman said. Never done a tfi before so this ones out of my hands, all I can say is if it does have a dizzy and you remove it make sure you know how to put it back in i.e tdc
Sorry cant be more help dude, good luck getting it started

It doesn't look like there is any coolant on the dizzy cap, just the tfi plug. In any case, when I get time I'll get the cap off and have a look. Hopefully that will be the answer and everything else is ok.

I'll chase around the auto shops for one in stock, post here is hopeless. Why does this stuff always happen at the end of the week?

thanks for the help too, so much easier with some direction from others.

mount the tfi on a heat sink near the dizzy but on the inner guard, much colder, and rewire to suit.

Well I replaced the TFI and it still won't start. I went into Repco before work on saturday and they only had a TFI (no coil) so I bought it.

The resistance measurements for the coil are way off what the service book suggests. I'm also getting no spark from the HT end of the coil. A new coil should hopefully be in town tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I think my neighbours just reckon I parked super-arrogantly for no reason now.

I like the idea of moving the TFI to somewhere cooler and more protected. Is there any reason why it shouldn't be moved (other than the connectors in the dizzy housing being a pain to get to)?

some fords in the usa had them mounted on the aprons, inner guards and had less failures, easy to mount on the dizzy for the ford assembly line, more failures.i did a google on tfi modules, good reading and some great ideas.try this-http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/remote_tfi.htm
