Ok so i changed the brake pads and rotors on my girlfriends Ford EL last week. Now she's got around to driving it after her father took it for a drive. All of a sudden the check abs light has come on after driving it to work this morning. What could cause this.

I'll most put money on it that you fitted NON-ABS rotors.

Notice the ABS tone ring inside, around the seal

If ABS rotors went on, its a reasonable bet that the incorrect series rotors were used.
check your receipt or the boxes if you still have them.

her father brought the rotors ive never done rotors before so wasnt sure.. ill check the box and post it up on here. im pretty sure they did look like this... apart from that what else could it be. It had the slotted holes on the side that i was told the abs sensor runs through..

It had the slotted holes on the side that i was told the abs sensor runs through.. Give the ABS sensor a bit of a clean and see if the sensor wasn't damaged when you were putting the new rotors in.

ABS rotors ARE different between EF and EL unlike many people believe.
I have had this issue myself along with other people. The ABS stuffs up and goes into fault after the change is done and when you do a diagnostic it will say you have a bum sensor. Its not the sensor its the disc. RDA etc only lists one part number for EF and EL where DBA actually list 2 part numbers. What the difference is I dont know but there is a difference.

IIRC it's only disc thickness that differs between EF/EL.
I've recently done an ABS swap between an EF & EL, no problems with existing rotors on both cars. 'I think' (someone correct me)EBII/ED front discs are interchangeable with EF/EL - the ABS pulse ring though is different due to the earlier Bendix system and later Bosch systems.

i just changed my rotors and on the box it said ef/el/au front disks their drilled and slotted paid 140 for the pair so i dont see why there would be a problem between the 2 models

dont know man thats what it said on the box ef/el/au front trotors should of taken a pic through the box out straight away

ED rotors are different to EF/EL, i fitted EF ones to a ED XR6 i owned and it came up with a fault, it also used to send the pedal to the floor under heavy braking, i'd say he has ED rotors fitted.

Tone ring on EB-ED has different spacing for the slots compared to EF/EL. That means that ABS will detect the car has at least one, or two wheels that are always at the wrong speed, and ABS wont know for sure about wheel slip.
