Its full of rust and corrosion and other goodies that I'd rather not be in there so I pulled it off to try clean it today.

I've managed to get it half clean by using the following methods -

Napisan and Domestos mixed up strongly in there, sit for 15 mins then rinse and repeat - that removed about half.

Filled it with pebbles from a fish tank, more Napisan and water then shook like crazy till by arms got sore. Rinsed and removed all pebbles from tank.

That helped remove another 20% or so of the crud.

Now i'm stuck trying to get it even cleaner. I've tried drano, radiator flush, various bleaches and detergents and nothing will clean the bastard.

Anyone know any other tricks?

I've heard of people using Napisan to clean them but I use caustic soda mixed with hot water.....Just one tea spoon of caustic soda with a container of hot water, Mix until granules dissolve then pour it in. But don't leave it in for too long and try not to breath in the fumes.

About $100 for a new one, I've seen BA or AU ones on EF/ELs so I hope they fit.. I'll be getting one next coolant change.

I think the best way make them look new again, is to buy a new one.
I've seen one painted Black to match the engine bay on a car at a show and f**k IT LOOKED s**t.

Haha, agreed 100%, i too dislike (a lot) the look of the tanks being painted, talk about a cheap solution to a f**k coolant res.
lol, ill go a new one soon too i think, when i spray up the engine bay nicely.. 8)
