Have not checked injectors

We can get it going again - does the computer have a habit of changing the timing and do we need to put it into diagnostics mode to do it properly?

God i wish it was a cleveland

the computer will continuously change timing depending on all the engine parameters, you need to put the ecu into self test mode to check / set the timing

Like said previously - if you put the ECU in self test mode, then it will allow you to set the base timing for about 30 seconds.
