One of my mates work cars is an AU falcon, and for some unknown reason the sump ended up cracking... and he reckons he didn't hit anything.... yeh yeh.... well just wondering if anyones ever heard of the problem, I ran a search and it didn't turn up anything, cause it sounds fishy as to me... But anyway, has anyone had to replace there sump, gut feeling you'd have to have the motor out wouldn't you? and such like... and how much for the sump.

thanks,
Jim

Neverheard of 1 cracking on its own, must have been hitting a few things to stress it to the point that it would crack.

Yeah is a very big job.We have removed to sumps on AU's one was a taxi and one was a young ladies car.On both with removed the timing case and replaced the O ring and the timing cover gasket and also replaced and sealed upthe new sump gaskets. They take almost a whole day of labour.Because the K frame at the front is in 2 pieces you cand remove the front piece and leave the back one there but you have to loosen the bolts a far way and jack the engine up and you have enough room to remove the sump.

We did these jobs because of oil leaks from the front cover because the O ring drys up and splits letting oil come out of the 10mm bolt at the front of the head and its located right near the top of the water pump.Because this part of the cover is under oil pressure it pushes large amounts of oil out past the bolts.

Yeah i have heard of an AU ever cracking a sump with out being hit by something. We work on many taxi's which are late model AU's and many customer cars.

maybe 1 day for you, this kind of thing would usually extend itself out to a week for me.
