Was working on the bosses car and found the injectors to be pumping in a ridiculous amount of fuel.. changed the injectors over and removed all the plugs, did a routine spark check since it still didn't want to fire properly - cranked it twice then all of a sudden this happened...

Looks like the sump was fuel of petrol.
An issue old school people keep an eye out for after the amount of times the diaphram used to let go in mechanical fuel pumps and fill the sump with fuel.

Yeah there was a ridiculous amount of fuel in the sump, though it was pretty unlucky to have the perfect mixture of vapour under the rocker cover to go off like that! Needless to say, there was an almighty bang and I lost my hearing for a few minutes.. lucky I didn't lose more than that!

Never seen that on a modern EFI engine, but i have seen something similar on old school carby & mech fuel pump engines, due to filling the sump with petrol

Cheers

Wasnt an LPG Car was it? - I noticed the pickles one was.

I got a conversion in sydney from a "reputable" place.. and they didnt relocate the rocker breather intake hose. So the Crank/Rocker Cover filled with a perfect LPG Mixture instead of just fresh air. I was lucky - I saw the problem and fixed it.

Ive seen that mistake on most LPG Conversions on those engines in the aftermarket. I think its just Lazy. The Rocker Breather needs to be blocked at the throttle body (just in front of the butterfly), and relocated to the fresh side of the mixer. Some mixers actually have a fitting for it.

I often see/hear of this happening, and Guys not understanding why. I dare say the EB/D crack was due to too much fuel in the sump as said, but that AU is definetly due to the LPG system

This happened to Dad's EA a few years ago.

It woke up the neighbourhood.

The engine filled with gas overnight and ignited when he cranked it over.

I have seen the odd LPG powered falcon blow up the rocker cover like that, always wondered how it managed to happen, now we know.

Cheers

Makes you wonder why ADR specify a sealed PCV as opposed to an open air one if this s**t can happen...
