I have been interested in the dohc conversions that seem to be happening more frequently now, im looking at doing the same thing to my ED. fortunately for me my mate just smashed his 02 ba ute =) so ive got all the goodies for the job, only problem is because it was front end damage the power steering pump has snapped off and took some of the mounting points with it. its seems like a waste to just chuck the whole head but unsure weather i can fix this or will i have to replace the whole head? can i use some sort of steel bonding putty or will this just be to weak? might be a stupid question but some outside opinions will help a great deal.
forgot to take photos of the damage so will post some pics up tommoro night.

Any decent fabricating or headwork place could probably weld on some metal then tap new threads for it.
We had it done on a boat motor years ago. Its a hassle carting the whole engine around but it saves buying a new one. |

thanks thats good news! where would the bracket be welded though? you cant weld to alloy can you??

Isn't the power steering bracket a part of the timing cover? You should be able to remove the rocker cover and the sump and replace the cover with a new one. Welding it all back together probably wouldn't work so well, the pully on the pump may be misaligned.
EDIT: Just re-read your first post, about the bracket maybe having broken away a part of the head, in that case, that could be a bit trickier

yeah still not fully familiar with the ba engine yet so im not sure if its part of the timing cover, all i know is the front 2 bolts that are easily visible have taken that portion of mounting with them which seems to be part of the head. the pump has no doubt copped it and the pulley has smashed off but nothing a new pump cant fix. done some ringing around and a few engine reconditioning places do these sort of fixes all the time so it sound like a fairly cheap option to have the engine 100% again.
Getting the whole thing towed to my place tomorrow im hoping when i pull it out that the alternator is still ok  but still not a bad buy for $1000!selling off the well body, rims, drive line, re-con diff, mirrors, front seats and a RH headlight if anyones interested 0416741466 standard ba xt ute

And the fun begins!
   fordman you were right the mounting points were on the timing cover. will be needing a new alternator, ps pump, and water pump.    Will add some more pics as i go.

You've made a good start. Will be plenty of hard days ahead. But keep at it. You'll have a great car at the end of it

yeah my mate a** ended a taxi on the freeway. isnt it great when your mate does the smashing the car part and you do the reap the rewards bit!
im gonna try and avoid a new timing cover and either get the bracket welded back on or run a custom bracket from the two bolts on the right, you can see in the closeup pic

Remember the thread search tool can be very helpful! cheers, your not wrong about the hard days  but im sure i can get it done alot faster and easier since im using every bit of the ba, checking out some threads and looks like the problems start when theres alot of chopping and changing.Jesse

Went fishing for a barra today and managed to hook one! gave it a real good clean up after i took the photos.
hopefully getting rid of the shell soon to bring in the car for the conversion. almost half way there... i think

Are those metal trans cooler lines stuffed? I see you cut them near the front of the engine, but that's all good. If they're still okay and you're not using them, i'll swing a bit of cash your way...

they are in good condition i havent cut them i just pulled the hoses off the the trans cooler but i will be using them for the conversion sorry
