Hi all
I have an eb Fairmont with a 4L and it is not starting at all At first, I thought it was the fuel pump, changed it and still not starting. then I googled about it and then I saw it might be the tfi module and then I change the module and still no luck. then thought it could be the coil so changed that as well and still nothing. then tried the spark and didn't see any spark. Then googled some more and found it could be the dizzy cap or rotor button, changed them and tried to start it but still nothing. so I'm stumped at what could make the car not start at all |

taking the dizzy cap off can you confirm rotor is rotating when you try to start?

The rotor button spins
but I found relays for fuel pump and a power relay would the power relay make it not spark |

The Hall sensor is inside the distributor. It has replaced the old points system. After this mount of time, it has probably cried "enough"!
A replacement is (or was 2 years ago) available from Repco for about 100 bux. You will need to take the distributor out, take it apart, replace the sensor and replace the dizzy. All in all, it is not a hard job. 2nd option: buy a used dizzy from say a EL, and use that. DO NOT BUY A CHEAPIE OF FLEABAY AS YOU WILL STUFF YOU ENGINE UNLESS: you swap over the distributor gear from yours to the "new" dizzy. In fact, even if you do get one from an EL, it would be a good idea to swap the gears, as yours has probably become quite friendly with the aux. shaft by now. It isn't a hard job, just knock out the pin, slide the gear off, replace the gear, knock the pin back in |

When mine packed in I got a second hand dizzy from the wreckers for 20 bucks, changed it on the side of the road and I was off again!
As creeture3 its not a hard job just take your time.

It's all good now finally started after I put in a brand new dizzy

I DO hope you changed the gear!!!!! Otherwise you could be up for another engine!!

The gear on your original dizzy is "matched" to the Aux drive and have been "happy" with each other for many years.
It has been known for new gears to strip the gear on the Aux shaft, this is why we always say to swap the gear. Mad2 said this a few posts earlier. Is the dizzy a genuine unit or is it a Chinese Copy? |
