Hi guys, got a crappy problem, my eb cranks but wont fire up.
It has fuel and spark but just wont fire.
Its been sitting in the shed not running for a tad over a year while i replaced the head and timing chain. Timing was set correctly so shouldn't be an issue.
Things to note, the car has an el computer and serp belt conversion. Still has the eb intake manifold.
Also a turbo but that shouldn't stop it from firing up.
Only other thing i can think of is crap fuel.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello,

Make sure you haven't gotten the timing wrong, as in Dizzy and Cam not matching ( firing on exhaust stroke ) Happens quite a bit, and is easily overlooked.

Fuel would be over a year old, about a quarter of a tank. I'm gonna get some fresh fuel today, maybe even some octane booster and see how it goes.

How would i check dizzy/cam timing i thought the dizzy only goes together one way? The dizzy wasn't changed/moved when the head was off and I lined the cam up correctly with the timing marks, even checked it when it wouldn't fire.

Was the engine on TDC when you set the dizzy?

Car was running before I pulled the head off and the dizzy wasnt moved, only leads pulled off and put back on again.

Yep, went and checked and timing is right. I've put in some 98 in the tank and a fuel system cleaner so it should sort out the crappy fuel. I've also pulled the spark plugs out and letting the fuel evaporate in case it's flooded with the craps fuel. Will give it another go later this arvo.

Spray some carby cleaner up the throttle body when you try starting it.

Had another crack, still not starting.
SWC I didn't have anything to spray in the intake.
Rechecked the spark, fuel, timing and everything seems fine.
Just so we're all on the same page with timing, when the cam timing mark is just above the head on the passenger side the rotor should point roughly at no 1 cylinder?

Hello,

The reason I sad to check the timing, is often when friends help they mean well, but can cause problems. If the bottom has been turned, even though it may be at TDC the Dizzy may be at # 6 while the Cam is at #1 when you put the Head back on. I got caught like this many yeas ago with a GF's motorbike. I also remember a Muppet I used to work with who bolted the head on, didnt set timing and then tried to start it. Valve hit the pistons, so he thought it was a flat battery and tried to roll start it. Put it together dry and didnt set the Valves. If that was me the Valves would have bent, but he got away with it and I had it running within an hour. I did bend Valves in a Honda Motor-bike, you had to idle it to set the Cam chain tension. It spluttered and jumped a tooth.

The timing may not be the fault, but it can easily be checked to eliminate it.

I'm at a loss for what it could be, checked timing a number of times now, fuel is flowing, has fresh fuel, has spark. I don't know what more I can do. I'm back at work now for 4 days so I'll give it another crack when I'm on days off again. I might just start from scratch again, set no1 to TDC and go over everything.

Hello,

I thought the engine may have been turned over feeding the Cam chain through. Does it fire at all with Aerostart ?

Had a good go at it today. Went right back to the beginning. Set no1 at tdc compression, checked valves timing was right, checked dizzy and yep it was out of sequence. Took it out and reset it. What a Bugger of a job that is trying to do it under the log manifold. Started the car first go.

The car has a j3 chip that was meant to be for 42lb injectors but it seems to be overfueling badly. On another note I seem to have a vac leak somewhere because it is idling high.
