G'day guys

Just did a thermo fan swap on my EB series 2 and it is working a treat!! Faster response and Better fuel economy.

The Big problem kicks in at night.

Lights, stereo (1K system with cap), gauges, Navman and thermos and i only have 10-12 volts at idle!!!

Driving along i have 13-14 volts and the battery is charging.

Car fires up ok but as soon as i hit temp the fans start up together and i get low voltage. Last night i tripped the interior lighting fuses and was driving home with only headlights

i have a standard EB alternator, should i be investigating EF/EL alternator conversion.

Has this been done???

Thanks in advance 8-)

that is a slight down fall with the thermo fans on the std eb alternator.
i had the same problem when i first fitted the fans in my ea..
i didnt really have any reall issues as majority of the time the alternator was charging and the volts were around 14v, it was only when the headlights, aircon, stereo ect was when the volts were around 10v, but i never really had flat battery issues with it..

i left it how it was for a fair while, but eventually did the ef serpentine belt conversion using all the ef accesories, alt, power steer pump, water pump, aircon compressor..
as the ef alt has 110 ams and can handle a fair amount of power draw...

there is a thread by paulmac on here somewhere, where he had modified the ef alternator to fit the eb using the eb belt

I think there are two EB alternators, a mitsu and a bosch? Do the research and make sure you have the better of the two. Also, a marginal alternator wont help, it will need to be mickey mouse.

Ensure your engine earth (under exhaust manifold) and alternator power lead are good quality. Min 4ga earth and 8ga alt. I found the latter made a big difference on my EA. Load up the system and measure voltage drop across each with a multimeter; you should be looking for less than 0.25V drop.

Finally, you may be able to run a two stage fan setup, i.e. 2nd fan only comes on at a higher temp. If you run the EL ECU with factory fan control this will not take much work.

There are 2 alternators in the EB's, 70amp & 85amp, mitsubishi & bosch. I too had issues at low rpm at night with everything on, i never suffered from a flat battery tho. I was running a 70amp alt.

I personally have upgraded my EB to run the EF 110amp alternator, bolt in to my EB. Had to modify the alternator & bracket a bit, details in my build thread on page 1 iirc. Since the upgrade, no further issues.

Cheers

thanks heaps guys

Appreciate the quick responses!!! 8-)

Does the ef serpentine belt conversion have any other benefits? :)

cheers

Auto tensioner keeps you from having to do that job every once in a while.

Concur with this upgrade - get rid of the Motorcrap alternator if you have a V8 and go with the Mitsu 110amp - when the thermos kick in it is a draw of 30 amps with the relay but the volts head straight back up to 13.8 with everything on...good invest for $50 for the alternator and $120-ish for the install. Parts are a great deal cheaper for these than the M/C ones($475++ for the brush kit alone - not including the regulator pack!!)

Keeps a lot cooler than the motorcraft one too

I too had these issues, and solved them by doing the serpentine conversion.

Brought a whole rooted EF motor for 100bucks and it had everything i needed for both the serpentine conversion and the BBM. needed new rad hoses, new rad and a new water pump, everything else can be modded to fit.

Good luck
Brett

Awesome!!!

Installed EF Alternator with modded brackets and new belts. Modifyed connections etc...

WOW... what a difference i can now have a/c, heater, de-misters, high beams, 1k sound system all cranked at idle. sits on 14v all day long!!!

Car Revs better too! must have been f%^$^d

Thanks to Fordmods, toranaguy, troyman, CPOCSM.

I also had a AMP meter in my aftermarket gauges drawing some additional amps, so i have disconnected this gauge.

i will add photos soon!!

cheers for your helpful suggestions!
