Can someone confirm that the smartlock module on a 4Ltr Auto EF Falcon is really located under the steering-column shroud ...as I've been told that ? Seems like I have a dodgy smartlock module as I often have to thump the left side of the centre-console (beside the gearshift) while turning the key then the engine starts. Seems a wierd place to thump ( others told me to hit the dash top or even the steering column...but no go, only if I hit near the gearshift !)...given that I heard the module is up near the steering. Can I just replace the module with a used one off any EA-EF ? or are they model-specific or key-specific ? Any help or comments appreciated thanks .....Steve.

Smartlock module is located directly in front of where your left knee is.

The smooth shaped panel under the door lock button.

Yes giving it a whack will help starting if it has issues, usually dry joints.

Replace it and chances are you'll have a nice starting car once programed. (a diy job too)

You will need an BEM/Smartlock (one device in an EF) module from an EF. They are unique to the EF, and you must get one to match the model of your car. So if you have a Futura or XR6 it should have a blue BEM and you need to put a blue one back in etc.

Cheers

OK.. thanx guys for the quick replies. And the programming bit - is that only programming the remote? in fact mine doesn't have a remote...just use the key in the slot (which reminds me, can only lock the car from driver door but to unlock have to use passenger door...must be a problem with the driver door actuator/lock ). Cheers....Steve.

When you replace the BCM you will need to go through the Smartlock Programing.

1) Turn off all accessories etc

2) Window down close door and turn key to reds. Smartlock light will begin to flash quickly.

3) Process takes 30 - 40 mins

4) when complete door locks will cycle twice and stop.

5) open door and check that Smartlock light is on solid red (no Flashing)

6) Turn off ignition and then start car

You do not need to reprogram your remotes

Programming needs to be done regardless.
and no, not for the remote.

If your car is a GLi (Black BEM), you can install any Futura/XR (Blue) BEM no problems and gain a dimming interior light, and variable wipers if you decide to 'hook' them up.

If you have a Futura and above, you need a Blue one to keep a couple of extra features.

Now to program the smartlock (factory immobilizer) you need to install the replacement bem.
First OPEN your Window.
Turn the IGN on and wait for 30mins.
Your smartlock jewel should flash rapidly telling you its 'immobilized' after the 30-45mins the door locks will cycle, start your car and your new BEM is ready to go.

Run the car for a bit, so you recoupe the battery from the 45minsutes standby.
