Hi everyone,

For some reason, my EF won't idle with the PCV connected to the vacuum line. If I disconnect it, then it runs (idling a little high), and if I use a catch can in between the PCV and the vacuum line then it seems to run okay. I changed the PCV in case that was the problem (blocked or something), and still the same.

Any ideas?

Is it possible that the vacuum hose between the PCV and the manifold has gone soft and under vacuum pressure its squashing closed in the middle? Would that have any effect on idle?

Get a short piece of hose and connect the pcv up and see if that helps. There usually is very little vac on that line. disconnect the hose and plug the fitting a see if the car will idle.

Perhaps there is something wrong causing too much vacuum on that line then - there's a fair bit of vacuum, I can feel it as I put a finger toward the end of the hose, and with it disconnected you can hear a violent sucking sound until a couple of seconds after the engine is shut off.

Plugging the end of the hose causes the engine to die. I swapped the hose with one from another EF, and it runs, but hunts a lot and revs go up and down from about 700 to 1200

Have you tried resetting your base idle?

Yes, I tried that (following the instructions on here) and it didn't help.

Changed the coolant temp sensor just now and it seems to have improved, so will see what happens.

My next major problem is the horrible oil leak from the front which seems to be from the timing cover  I'm not looking forward to finding out what that's gonna take to fix

Check the cold air sensor as well, under the Throttle Body in the manifold.
