hey guy's i think my distributor has just packed it in and i am needing to replace it...i have been told that i neeed to have to get one with matching numbers that is imprinted on the side of the distributor...i have also been told that i should do the ecu first and go from there...

if any of you can help me with this issue that would be fantastic

cheers

if your dizzy has died? no spark?? you can use any dizzy from ea to el, aslong as its mpfi..
there are only 2 types, one for mpfi engine and cfi engine. cfi are only in ea and some series 1 ebs.
but ea and eb also have mpfi.
so yes aslong as the p/n are the same its ok..
i would change the dizzy and coil before changing the engine ecu..
when there is no spark a failing tfi module on the dizzy is probably the most common thing to fail ..

the engine ecu's are pretty reliable and dont normally fail under normal conditions..

i have already replaced the tfi module on it with a brand new one...still no spark...about a week ago i replaced the dizzy cap, rotor button, plugs and leads and all was well then all of a sudden it would not start, after many hours of working on it i got it working...when it is cold it runs alright and when it is warm it misses like anything and eventually just dies...you can drive it but it cannot be taken over 2000-3000 revs, if it goes over that it just cuts out, hence why people are telling me that it is the computer

hmmm
it may be the hall sensor inside the dizzy??
is there alot of movement in the dizzy shaft?
otherwise if you can borrow or get another s/h ecu i guess it wont hurt to try...

Did you put the white heat transfer paste on the back of the new module?

the hall is fine nothing wrong there and there is absolutely no movement in the shaft, thats why im so confused everything to do with the dizzy seem to me to be fine but i could be wrong...the timing is set perfect so i haven't the faintest idea what is going wrong...for $66 i can pick up a s/h ecu so i might give that a shot and see if it makes any difference...if its not that then ill get another dizzy and if all else fails after that then ill put a match in it and make a insurance claim lol

another long shot but are you sure its loosing spark?

maybe its fuel related? a tired fuel pump or a blocked fuel filter can give a similar simptom...

fuel pump and filter were replaced by a mechanic about a fortnight ago, all lines and the injector rails were clean as a whistle

replace your ignition coil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if it still fails to get spark then it will be your hall pickup sensor inside the dizzy nect too the chopper disk.

Easiest way to check coil is if you have a noid light (think that what they call em!) used to check fuel injectors. Unplug the coil and plug the noid light into the loom, crank engine and if it flashes, tfi module and dizzy ok. If it doesn't, most likely coil, or maybe ecu.

You can also plug the little tester light at the PIP signal pin TFI module, easier access.. ALL the road service mechanics have these logic/light probes. Easy way too diagnosis a stuffed TFI module........

95% of the time on a EL it's the coil. 5% it's the dizzy.
If the noid light flashers at the injectors the dizzy & ecu are going to be fine.
If the noid light flashers at the coil plug then the coil will need replacing that's if you have no spark but you have injector pulse.
If you have no injector pulse or spark the problem then will be the dizzy or ecu relay under the radiator coolant bottle.
Bosch make a new coil now. It looks like a jap coil which is much better than the old one's.
I replaced my coil with the new style one not because it stopped working but the new coils are ten times better.

never really thought about it being the coil, i took the car up to my mechanic yesterday afternoon and he had it plugged into his diagnostic system, he overode the error codes that were coming up through the ecu and the car ran fine, as soon as he unplugged the diag the car died, hence why im leaning towards the ecu, also the ecu is the cheapest of all parts so ill try cheaper fixes first then work my way up
