hey guys could you help me plz with me 97 el 6 cyl when i start it up in the morning and rev it at about 1000 rpm to warm it up it has a blue smoke coming out exaust but once the motor has warmed up its like magic the smoke doesnt exist i tried to smell it but it doesnt smell like oil burning it just has the normal plain smell. The dumb a** mechanic recons my rings are gone but if it was true wouldnt it smoke all the time?
the motor has done over 250k but i dont know where to start looking cause im not loosing any water or oil

the smoke would disappear when the rings warm up and expand.

if not the rings then the valve stem seals are suspect.

white out the back is water,,blue is oil and black is fuel..

If your not losing heaps of oil, then its the valve stem seals.
How dirty does the engine look where the oil filler cap goes????
If its got sh!t on the rocker-gear, then it hasn't had regular oil changes, and this buggers the seals, all the seals ( F & R crank seals etc...).

One way to test for valve stem seals is drive down a steep hill and use compression braking. this creates higher manifold vacuum and seems to suck oil in if the inlet valves are the cause. Exhaust are a bit harder to diagnose.

2lts per 10,000km is a bit too much for my liking. My dads old XD would use 1/2 lt per 10,000km. That engine was like new inside it was that clean. The only oil that was ever used in it was Castrol GTX then GTX2 later as plain GTX was finnished.
