You can do an engine change in your backyard, it's not illegal. What makes you ask that?

It's legal...just make sure you give paper work to the your RTA to update your engine numbers...of course make sure your engine isn't illegal in the first place.

Just what are you trying to ask? Clarify your question a little. What do you mean by any year engine? 1972 or 2010?

not 100% sure but i dont think you are allowed to put a older mdel engine in a newer car
due to emissions laws
could be wrong tho

its not that but someone was whining on the forum a few months ago about how hes friend dropped an ef motor into an au and wondered why it woulnt run,au has different sensors and things tht the ecu needs to have, and the ef motor didnt have it,
quite sure swc will confirm this as he was the one telling the man what needed to be done.
a step backwards in my opinion even if you can get it to run, au is a smoother running engine

I think that's ECU related...if you run stock ECU everything "should" be okay.

But to the OP...don't bother putting an EL engine into an AU...just get another AU motor and chuck it in.

You could put an EF/EL motor in an AU if you wished, why I don't know, but you would need to run all the AU gear, ie. BBM, Throttle Body, Coilpack, etc and AU ECU. AU cam sensor is taken from the front of the Timing case, EF/EL don't have this option and an AU timing case has a different front seal to an EF/EL.

You would be better off just picking up another AU motor and dropping it in. Would be a lot easier.

isn't there also a sensor on the back of the head on the au motor?
