Another idea for ya? Have the 'Y' valve welded into the exhaust after the cat if you like and have an electrical servo connected to it and then wire the servo into the VSV that controls the butterflies in the intake manifold (assuming you have an EF onward). When you feel like a bit of spirited driving give it a blat and when the revs get to 3500rpm the servo is activated and the exhaust opens right up... Yay? Nay? Lol :D

Just cut it out and if it drones add a bit of sound deadening carpet in the boot and under the back seat.

Mine drones at 2500rpm but sitting in 4th between 80-115 there is no drone. As long as it is under 2500rpm she runs sweet and no annoying droning on the highway..

i wouldn't be worried about the drone, unless it's a 3in. exhaust system.
i've got a setup on my ute which you unbolt the exhaust at the headers and tuck it to the side.
so it's mega loud.

i have a v8 fairlane and am having this mod done today. I have extractors, high flow cats etc with redback 2.5 system with 2 mufflers. I have a decent note but too quiet. I am having the plates put in the rear section as seen in the above diagram. i think the idea of being able to change between muffler and straight pipe section should work well as i too do the odd long trip where drone is an issue.
i will let you know how it goes.

my guess is with the i6 single tip the mod would cost around the $100-150 mark at an exaust specialist.

Great stuff Neal-50! Be sure to let us know how it all goes.

Any pics of the final thing would be great too. :)

its done! and i am happy. the rear muffler fitted redback system sounded ok, but now its got its bark back! The boys at UNIQUE EXAUSTS did a great job, the Plated jont is in a nice easy to get to spot for quick change over when needed. 2 bolts and a few rubber hangers and its done.

I will take some pics today and get them up asap.

merry xmas

What about a merge pipe that comes off the headers and slightly off to the side, but tith a cap bolten onto it? You want loud? Then just unbolt the cap and its as loud as you'll ever want it.

If your exhaust is too loud on the highway then your not going fast enough!
Seems like a good idea though, but I wouldn't be stuffed changing them ever myself - too lazy.

Exhaust mods pics.

approx retail price for plates, bolts, gaskets, pipe work and twin tips $200. The use of a single tip would bring the cost down considering these tips are $50 each.

Looking great there Neal! I think I might leave this one to the professionals too. Very neat job theyve done.

I'm all pumped to get this done sooner now :D
