Gday its been years since ive been on here.... any way my ef's head gasket has gone. I was wanting some recommendations for a repairer on the sunshine coast.

now apart for some missing coolant which may be being lost from a hose and a rough idle when first start, ive noticed nothing. the oil is clean not cloudy and it still has plenty of power

The mechanic says its stuffed but im not convinced is there any thing else i should be looking for.
The cars radiator blew recently and it over heated.

the quote is a steep $1500 - $3500 depending on damage

Ive seen whole xr6 engines for sale for around $700 is it worth just dropin a new engine in or would the fitting costs be sky high?

Sorry for the long post.

g,day archibald, sounds like head gasket, rough idle on start up is coolant getting into the cyclender when sitting for a while, mine did same thing, i found leaving the colant resivour cap half tight stops it building presure, only a tempary solution, the quote is about right if head is warped needs to be machined flat again ect, id fix it coz you dont know if the engine you get could need gaket as well, if your car has high kays ect maybe? and if your gonna keep car for a long time, have to way up the pros and cons ect, do some research for good mechanics on google or on here, good luck!

Bugger I was hoping it wasn't that... I cant afford to fix it so were down to the fairmont. its a shame the falcon was stock as a rock, the absolute base model but it was in great condition in and out. thanks any way now i just need to get the fairmont up to scratch.

the cost is in it all up, new oil and cooling system flush new thermostat gaskets new head bolts ect then labour, if you can find some one a friend of a friend or relitive ect that would be your best bet, other wise not worth getting that head on ebay, its in vic as well, cost to get it to you, all ads up unfortunatley, :(

I had my gasket done in September 2008 at a mechanics at Slack's Creek (about 17km south of Brisbane) for a cost of $900.

This included: (from the invoice)
Removal of cylinder head
Surface machine cylinder head
Checked valves and pressure test cylinder head
Refit cylinder head
New head bolts
Gasket set

I'd shop around as I reckon you can get it done for closer to $1,000

If you have a basic mechanical knowledge, you could do it for about $400 with all brand new gaskets and seals, including an AU MLS gasket.

Nope my mechanical knowledge is rather limited. nothing has ever really gone wrong so i never needed to learn.
