sounds like there's a problem with the wiring which could be anything from your ignition switch to the wiring at the starter.
you need to rule a few things out such as power at the relay on terminal no. 30 with the ignition on, and while key is in the crank position check to see if there is power at terminal no. 85.

hmmm, i have now had a wierd idea that may just work.... using the earth of the starter solenoid, connect that to the battery with a starter button wired in... good or bad idea
Bad idea - fix it properly, this option will take less time.

Ok, it is not the starter relay... Earthing the starter solenoid while the ignition is in the "ON" position will start the f**k thing... any ideas before i take ot to an auto electrician
You need to explain how you're actually 'earthing' the solenoid - I'm picturing earthing the starter body to the car frame, etc. Otherwise people won't understand totally what you're saying.
Sounds like you've already established the 12v side of things is okay.

You can't 'earth' the solenoid on it's own - it's already earthed through the starter motor frame. I'd check as EBgizmo has suggested, the engine earth lead might have crappy connections - check for continuity from the starter motor frame to the car body.

When earthing the soleniod, earthed from the control wire to the neg terminal on the battery
