i have a '95 Mustang, when i start it up from cold although it initially sounds like it wants to take off shortly after the revs drop down to the normal count (around 500) but when i put it in reverse the rev counts soars up to the 1.5 - 2 mark for only a second or two then drops down again...should i be worried about this, none of my previous cars have ever done anything like it???

thanks :o)

Thread moved for you.

The flare in RPM does sound a little excessive. Altho not being familiar with mustangs i couldnt say for sure.

Auto?

Is it only when you go to reverse that the rpm picks up? What if you go to nuetral?

The V6 weren't a great thing Xine, they were a bad thing in the Explorer so i'm going to assume the Mustang is no different.
Sell it and buy an 8 lol.

Lol, the americans dont build em like they used to hey?

Laughing at ford's expense aside - it sounds to me more like a sensor/engine management issue as opposed to a catastrophic problem with the engine itself.

At the end of the day, the engine management system on these engines should be fairly similar to that used on our beloved falcons.

My bet is currently on the idle speed controller, just like the ones that screw up on our falcs lol. Mine used to stick, wouldnt open properly on a cold start, so the engine would splutter, sometimes stall, before the isc finally got its a*** into gear and opened up properly.

If you have a spare hour or so, pull the idle speed controller off the throttle body and give it a good soak in degreaser or the like. Paul may have some tips to do a better job of cleaning it?

Yeah definately worth trying to clean the ISC, a can of carby cleaner or even degreaser is good, then use a compressor and blow it out.
Only thing is, i have no idea where the ISC is or what it looks like on yours LOL, it wont be far from the throttle body though.

Like paul, im not terribly confident describing something on an engine ive not had anything to do with :)

But chances are... the idle speed controller will be a cylindrical object that hangs off the side of the throttle body. If you're taking it into the shop tomorrow, any mechanic worth his salt should be able to find it for ya.
