if you can here a rattling sound coming from your exhaust like there is something loose in there towards the front, thats a dead give away.
Secondly if it starts to get a bit smoky etc it could be on the way out

You poke it....I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

could always pull it out and give it a shake.. see if anything falls out, the dead ones ive seen plenty falls out of them...

or if you can attempt to shine a torch thru it, see if its blocked up...

Like Mitch said, pull it out and have a look down the guts. If there are sections that appear to be melted, you need a new cat.

Allegedly... you could knock the matrix out with a long half-inch extension bar ( or big screwdriver with a through-shank) and a lump hammer. Then, in theory, you could insert a piece of exhaust pipe through the guts. so that the exhaust gas has a straight shot. If you left the cat empty, the exhaust gas will expand when it hits the open chamber and then flow will be restricted
when it has to find it's way out the back of the chamber.
This is not legal and is offered purely for entertainment purposes.

Assuming your cat is stuffed, and you want to keep your street car legal, try your local self-serve wreckers. Provided you can see through the matrix (core) you'll be right and it's a helluva lot cheaper than buying new.

Hmmm, that reminds me: I may have an open cat on one of my (Purely offroad, you understand) cars... Better fix that when I replace the rattly muffler.
