Mine was a 3 inch hi flow Magnaflow..

It had to be modified to fit it in my car.. the exhaust guy had a right winge about the amount of time he spent on it. :-)

My Genie extractors have a 3 inch collector so I got a 3 inch magnaflow and he had to shorten it to get it into the space left by the factory. Then he had to taper the 3 inch outlet down to 2.5 inches to merge it into the 2.5inch exhaust. The end result was brilliant.. the inlet was shorter than it had been, but not much and was a smooth transition and the cells were still set back a bit from the mouth.

So yes.. you can to a degree modify cats.. as long as you don't make them more restrictive or damage the cells inside.

This is my CAT. It is a modified Zuna-Starker from a BMW.
2 & 1/2" inlet, twin 2 & 1/4" outlets.

it depends on whether or not you have extractors and what brand, some extractors vary in length, so that will have an effect on length.. but most cats have a couple of inches of pipe either side...
