Im in need of some help about my el. I was travelling at about 60k's when the car all of a sudden cut out and would not start again.

While attempting to start it, it would crank fine but it sounded like it was backfiring. I then figured timing was stuffed for some reason so i called the nrma road service guy and he pointed out the dizzy cap clip came off on one side. While pushing down on the cap it still done the same thing

i got it towed to the mechanic and he replaced the cap and rotor and he just rang me saying its still not going.

Im just wondering what else it could be?

should i change the distributor aswell?

Fairly standard for an EL - There have been a lot of posts on this exactly this already... look.

My money would be on the module from what you have said.

Cheers,
C

i changed the dizzy cap, rotor button, distributor and module.

still no go.

We have attempted to set the timing, but it continues to backfire and refuses to start

When ignition is turned on (car not cranking) can you hear the fuel pump start up? It should run for a couple of seconds then stop if the engine is not started. I had my car just stop on the freeway, had spark and found it to be a seized fuel pump.

Bad news, the mechanic has just informed me that the distributor drive gear is damaged..

Its funny, because on my invoices (just bought the car) it says exactly the same thing happend in january and they replaced the whole motor with a younger one..6 months later the same thing happends to the new motor

Will be getting it towed home, to do my engine conversion earlier then expected.

Still need to find a distributor drive gear as the new motor needs one.

mate i feel sorry for you. the exact same thing happened to my EL, 2 weeks after i bought it. me and my mechanic mate were astounded to find the auxillary shaft that was f**k was shinier than the new one we just bought. found out it had spat the shaft at 163,000km, and the job wasnt done properly, and it shat again at 209,000km.

so my motor is on its 3rd auxillary shaft... they are not a nice thing to replace

I would be looking for a blocked oil gallery. I think there would have to be an oil starvation problem for sure!
