Hey

I'm pondering upon the idea of getting my EF engine rebuilt but I am unsure as to whether it'd be worth it.

The bloke who'd be doing it for me says I should expect around 140-150rwkw if I do, do it but he also says it'd cost around $7000, he says it'd also be ready for turbo at the time that I wish to put it on, forged pistons, etc.

But other people are telling me I should spend that money elsewhere such as on a later model falcon or my father, being so old school wants to build me a V8 to drop in it.

Anyone got thoughts on this?

Several things to consider:

1. Are you going to do most of the assembly work or get someone else to do it?

2. Are you planning to keep the car for 5-10 years? A project car?

3. Is horsepower you aim or just making the engine reliable?

I did a performance rebuild on my EF 4.0L and had the bottom end assembled properly by an engine builder. It came out to about $3500 and I put everything else together and installed the engine.

If you a planning to sell the car in the next year or so, a good AU engine from the wreckers is another option.

Hey mate.

Yeah I was planning to get 99% of the work done by them just because, time and effort, I plan to keep the car for quite a while longer with mods progressing along the way, Just mainly want as much power as possible while also not having to worry about reliability.

I'm going to have a second project car as well, just another EF but with the 302, which I'll be rebuilding myself with no expense spared.

I was getting stupid quotes like $7k as well for an EA engine mild workings on it. Stup[id money IMO. I am doing what I can myself. That's a ripoff.

Alright, thanks for the info, I might just leave it all stock then and just dedicate my time to a 347 stroker in a Fairmont. Probably a better engine to throw large amounts of money at anyway. Better value if Im gonna do that myself.

Thanks guys!

Put alloy heads, cam, extractors & exhaust at the top of your list! That will bite into your $7k.... :D

I did a 347 a few years ago. That won't be cheap.... Just try doing 347 stroker and not doing the heads etc mentioned by Shortshift. It's like saying you'll only eat a couple of chips when you have a whole packet in your hands.

haha, if I could I would, but my dad the V8 fanatic that he is, and as he will be helping me the majority of it (He has built literally tonnes of Windsors and Cleveland's) he'll wanna go all out, hell I wanna go all out, time to go start picking the money trees and making a start.

Anyone quoting 7k for a basic engine rebuild should be slapped through the phone, with a brick. Then have their business name & shamed on here as thats outrageous!

Whats the going rate for a short? I got quoted $2K on a rebuilt to stock short engine, I only want a short as I've got a good head, is that a good price?
