Just got a few questions, wandering if this could be a computer fault or poor wiring on my EA, these electrics "symptoms" occur maybe once a month sometimes every 2 months.

1: sometimes when i turn off the engine and take out the key out, the engine will remain on for between 30 seconds to 5 minutes (shuts off when it wants)

2: sometimes my idle speed decides to sit above 1000 and i have to put it neutral cause i can feel it against my brakes when im at the lights.

3: (very rarely happens) With the engine started, if i turn on the headlights, the engine turns off and wont start again unless i turn on the interior light and when it does this once in a blue moon, it will continue giving problems the whole night.

I haven't said much to anyone about this except my friends who laugh at my car but starting to get worried i'm gonna get shafted by my car. I just want some general opinions incase anyone has experienced the same thing before i go to the auto sparky.

Cheers

Electircal fault mabe :? if your car has an ecu it could be that... these are just stabs in the dark though mabe get it checked out by an auto elec or a mechanic, about the rpm thing is your car auto or manual because if it is manual that mabe your clutch ummm apart from that i cant thnk of anything.

Nah, its auto, when i put into neutral after about 5-10 seconds, the revs drop back down, then as soon as it goes to drive, the idle goes back up to over 1000. Ive noticed each time this rev thing happens, when i had started the car, the revs flew up higher than normal (and i dont give it gas at the start). And yeh, its got an ECU.

All your grounds ok? A poorly grounded system can cause all sorts of interesting quirks.

Could be a sensor sending the ecu the wrong info, have the unit tested, over idling can be real dangerous dude, dont wait for the bloke in front of you at the lights to find out.

well if it continues to run, and timing is ok, maybe it has a faulty ignition switch.

ive had the same problem with my EA.....when i started the car and the Head lights turned on the car would just shut off and all electrics would turn off.....turn the ignition off and then try again it keeps happening... ended up being several problems. first the positive wire at the battery terminal was hanging on 2 small coppper wires...i rewired and works. the wire for the ignition and sparkies was also all rusted out so i rewired that as well so that worked. with the idle problem i think ur Throttle body needs a bit of a clean. but with the ignition off and the car still running i think u need to check ur ignition.

first check the battery terminals and wiring then ur ignition. thats all i can think off.

if after all that ur car starts to shut on and off while ur driving......get ur dizzy replaced. cause after one electrical problem came another....fix it now or ull have nightmares.

cheers

My EA rev'ed high on it's own.
I got told an old taxi cab fix, bent the stepper motor
on the carb out off the way so it doesn't contact.
They get a signal from somewhere that tells them to up the rev's.
Then just up the idle with the idle scew on the carb to a slightly hign rpm.
The six's dont really need a increase in rpm with load.

Typical heavy handed taxi fix by people too lazy or ignorant to do something properly

Be aware the power steering switch is a normally CLOSED switch and can lift the idle up to around 1200rpm plus, pretty easily. If it were bridged-out then that wouldn't happen!! Bad or loose earths will signal an unstable system voltage to the ECU and it will react accordingly with the idle speed motor.
