as far as i remember on a ea-ed its a 4sp auto thing the auto locks down in 3rd gear and the power switch light flashes on the dash regardless weather the button is on or off. mine used to do it when the auto go hot or overworked, if i got out of stop/start traffic and gave the auto time to cool then pull over turn it off wait a minute and start it agian it would be fine

basically it allows for the car to get home/mechaincs at a slow safe speed

E seris cars have it in the auto tranny if somethign goes wrong the transmission ecu will only allow 3rd and reverse
as well as park/neutral.

AU's have the same feature PLUS in case of loss of coolant the ecu will shut down cylinders to allow progress to allow car to be repaired ( e gas and Xr's excluded )

as for getting out of limp home mode
fix the problem!
