heres what im thinking of doing

bored out to 4.2l, new pistons and rings to suit, new cam shaft, full extractors and exhaust for the car, lifters and the usual new plugs, belts and leads..ect

how much does that leave me to play with and what is a must do mod while its open.

full exhaust your looking at a grand fitted, less if you can do it yourself....therefore with the grand left i would do cam (say $400ish) and either headwork or try and get it chipped with the other 600 for best bang for your buck

learn how to drive first then hot up your car. it will be s**t of money to insure and u will most likely have a stack in your first 12 months of driving. plus save your money for head gasket replacment. just my opinion.

I wont be driving it until this time next year, so that gives me about 10 months of experience in my current ED.

yeah the custom 2.5mm over size pistons and machining would eat up most of that $2000.
You'll need at least a 94.75mm piston to get a true 4.2L

is there much of a performance gain from making it a 4.2?

Boring out the engine block isn't a good thing to do, it makes the walls of the bore too thin, and prone to cracking or ballooning. But if you somehow get it resleeved to do that, would cost a fortune.
