probably because the entrance angle of the throttle body into the intake has a bigger affect on power than a few extra turns of pipe.

As for aluminium being a good idea - what advantage does it have?

you want the air to be as cold as possible

i wouldnt be it on the right side coz its str8 over the exhuast
and i would just go with stainless
