He lads i just went to my local engineers place to get some quotes on some head work, he was talking about a match port and polish? has anyone heard of this, im new to this stuff so not really sure, also he said he will put in tickford valve springs + do the match port and polish and reco the head so everything flows better, would i gain any power advantages from this?? and if so what power increase would i be looking at?, my car is a 1996 EF auto, has Gt snorkel K&N filter, extractors with 2 1/2 system through, the cam is still stock, any info on this would be great

Match porting is where the intake and exhaust ports are matched to the intake manifold and exhaust manifold. So there are no lips to disturb air flow.
I think its included in blue printing an engine.

Sounds like the guy you went to knows what he is on about.

Yeah you get much better power because the air flow is better especially that its port matched.
I dont know how much power you would get, it depends on how much porting the guy does.
I guess a decent port job and matching the manifolds maybe an extra 20-25kw seeing as you have extractors and exhaust system. Dont quote me on those numbers though.
While the head is off you should probably get a better cam put in at the same time. Then power would really jump due to extractors, porting and good profile cam. Apart from the cost of buying the cam it shouldnt cost you anymore to fit it because he would have to take the old one off to do the porting and change the valve springs.

Power improvements will directly be dependent on what others mods - cam, extractors, etc., also what condition the rest of your donk is in, and what condition your current head is in. I'd definately do the cam while you've got it open,.
But I' agree with Timmeh that the guy isn't spinning you a load of crap.

What do guys think a good cam would be? is the DEV3HL cam from JMM any good thats the one ive been thinking of getting.

Try and get hold of an XR6 cam. That would be a simple cam that would definately work. But if you more power you need a more aggressive cam and I'm not sure which cam would be best depends on what the head port would be like.
I would definately ask the guy whos doing your port and match job what cam he would put in your head because he is doing the port job.

Intake Port matching on EF/L 6cyl's is next to useless. Whack an intake gasket on the head and have a look for yourself.

port matching is a waste of time with a BBM inlet which is the best option for a street drven car where you want a wide powerband.

The falcon head needs help but port matching isn't going to help.

look down the port at the tight bend in the exhaust this is the bittle neck.

porting of the inlet and exhaust tracts and removal of the bulge between the valves and unshouding of the valves will allbe a good idea though

Getting rid of any interferance on ports is better than leaving lips to disturb airflow. You can adjust the gasket to fit the port after you modify it. Of course its tricky, but it wouldn't be hard for a professional engine builder.

Whys that? Back pressure? But if you have a good exhaust sytem and extractors the perfect amount of backpressure should already be applied.

if you have extractors the extractors have bigger ports than the head so it is useless to match them and same on intake side it might be better if the bbm is bigger than head (the port sizes) its worth doin it
