hello all,
here's the story, on my way home from the shops today i decided to give my car a little poke and floor it threw first into 2nd, when i got home i noticed a loud knocking noise and it sounds like it's not fireing on a cylinder, the motor seems to run alright other then the noise and the apparent miss fire, can anyone offer some info on what this could be? my partners dad thinks it might be a push rod but i think its somthing a little more serious like maybe it's thrown a piston or somthing. im hoping im wrong and it's just somthing small.

what engine? what car??
im assuming its e series, so on that there is no pushrods as its overhead cam..
my first thought to your description is either a broken rocker arm or valve spring...

If one cylinder isn't firing, it should be idling very rough. If so, you can check which cylinder by unplugging the injectors one at a time with the engine idling. If the idle gets worse with the injector unplugged, that cylinder is fine. If unplugging the injector makes no difference, that cylinder is not producing power for some reason (eg, failed injector, spark plug or lead; broken intake rocker or lifter). First place to start diagnosis is to pull the spark plug in question (after the car has been up to operating temp) and "read" it. There are lots of websites showing what to look for. If it's a bad injector, you can tell by swapping injectors around and seeing if the problem moves with the injector.

If your idle is fine, but just making lots of noise, it could be a stuck or failed lifter - though that would normally be described as a loud 'ticking' sound. All of the above are reasonably cheap fixes. A deeper knocking sound is often coming from the "bottom end", for instance a failed rod bearing. That would be a major, and it may be cheaper to swap in a good, used engine. A blown exhaust manifold gasket will allow you to hear unmuffled exhaust from just one cylinder, making a real racket. Using a short piece of hose as a stethoscope can help isolate the source of the noise.

havnt lost any coolant, it is a little foamy though, i posted a thred about it a while ago. no excess water from what iv been able to see and tiny bit of smoke when reving really high in park.
my partner and i have confirmed that it's a loud tapping noise and not a knock.

I would hazard a guess and say it started here:

And fell apart here:

If the car can't handle what I dish out, I reckon it must be a design defect. Fortunately, it hasn't happened (yet) with my Falcs.

i never hit the rev limiter, my mate who fixed it said bouncing it off the limiter would do it but iv never hit the limiter, the highest iv reved it in park was about 5500rpm, and i never held it there. reved it up and let it go back to idle. iv only had the car for just over a month and we think the car was thrashed before i got it...

An E series falcon thrashed by ANY of its owners? Thats unheard of!

If you have gone to 5500rpm, your pretty much at the limiter anyways. do safe to say you could have tagged the limiter.

5500rpm is a bit close but never actually herd the limiter kick in..only done it once or twice, i reved the f*** out of my 1998 camry when i had it, i had it bouncing off the limiter for a good 30 seconds at one point and the motor was fine, i did eventualy blow the motor up ( that was my plan anyway ) but the top end of the motor was fine, just blew oil rings, piston rings and other things lol..pre much owned the gearbox too loland it had over 200,000k's on it, my falcon has just hit 160,000k's...genuin too, not a mark on the paint work, inside is in mint condition besides the crappy drooping roof lining lol. and still goes like the clappers lol

So say drive like miss daisy?

C'mon a lil poke won't cause it and saying that, that's what rev limiters are for.

And the smoke could be the normal running rich black smoke when revving a e-series hard as per map on the ecu

No, I'm saying rev limiters + no load = worse than limiter through first and second, that's probably where it let go of a spring. Then booting it under load has caused the rest.
Also white smoke is bad. The only thing that burns white is metal. Oil burns blue and fuel burns black, water creates steam (which is not white smoke)

Regardless, I've always been a big believer in the theory that if you don't know how to fix it or can't afford to, then don't abuse it.
