it could be a combination of you giving it a bit more of a thrashing, days are getting warmer, and a new exhaust heats up to much higher temps until it wears in.
its still in the normal area so i wont be too worried

I was a bit worried with mine the other day aswell, it was 34c and the temp gauge was just touching the R in NORMAL. So i turned the heater on full and put boost button on and it went down to A.

you turned the heater on to make the engine cooler?

Yeah, it starts circulating coolant through the heater core.
The heater core will act like another radiator, albeit alot less effective.

less effective? well its not the greatest, but got me out of trouble many a time. towing, city drive 45c days etc.

Do you think a heat shield over the extractors would keep it much cooler?

Of course its less effective then the radiator, theres less surface area, and alot less airflow through it.
