What is the code on the head?
Four digits, eg. 91AA, 94AB, etc..
edit: codes at the front of the head if youve never seen it before.

Its either an EF engine.

Or a very early EL engine, like pre 12/96.

What colour is the rocker cover?

Thats an EL cover... So just have to assume that its an EL engine. Just one of the very very first EL engines, before they moved fully over to EL parts.

Oh to pull my old one out and new one in plus the engine i bought was $1100 in total. I figure its a small price to pay considering that engine was showing some real signs of age like head gasket alone to fix was $600.

I paid $500 for my AU motor with 40,000km on it :)
But I guess it's a bit harder to sell an AU motor due to not many AU's actually needing motor at this stage...
