Hi All

my Fairlane has a remaunufactured Gem engine, it has new everything in it but for some reason while i was driving it one of the lifters in the engine sounds like it is clicking loudly. it is loud enough to be heard from in the car with windows up. what can i do about it?

i was only on the phone Gem engines this morning and they said everything was replaced in this engine.

if i have to replace the tappet is there a way to do it without pulling the head off?

Regards

Barry

yes there is plenty of oil. i have now checked and it is one of the tappets. i have tried to remove the tappet rail but the bolt at the back is over tentioned and the bolt has been rounded off.

i am trying to run some engine flush through but i am doubtfull that is going to work.

i am not sure what to do at this point

ok i have replaced the damaged tappet, the noise does not sound as bad but it is still definatly there. should that make it go quiet strait away or does does it take a while to come good?

the next thing i am thinking of doing is getting another set of lifters from a wrecking yard and putting them on the engine. would that make the noise go away?

Below is a link to the noise it is making

New HLA's can take a while to pump up. How many km have you done since you changed it?

Don't use 2nd hand HLA's. Get new ones if you need them.

Take it for a drive tomorrow, they can pump up in minutes or take a couple of days, sometimes they are a pain. Did you bleed them down before you reinstalled them?

The galories are clear too i cleaned them out and blew them out with a compressor

No.

Take the HLA, insert a small Jewlers screwdriver into the end that goes into the rocker, when you do this a little oil will come out, while pressing the screw driver in, compress the HLA and more oil will come out. You should then the able to compress them easily. Use a little Petrolium jelly and reinstall.

Make sure you reinstall the shim the right way round, the tapper end of the shim goes up into the rocker and the face with the 3 groves goes towards the HLA.

Don't put the HLA into oil and prepump them.

Bolts go back in at 25nM.

Done all that and it is still clicking away. the guy at the wreckers said let it idle for half an hour so i will try that and see how it goes.

yep, no change, car has been idling for over half an hour and it is still noisy. i am not sure what i can do at this point.

what should my next step be? i am just sinking a lot of money trying to fix this. i could buy new lifters they are $130 on replacing all the lifters and find it still makes that noise. or i could get a compleately new assembly from the wreckers and again find this issue.

I have an NA fairlane with an ED head in it that is working. i am thinking i could try the rockers from that engine in the NL and see how it goes, if the noise goes away i will rebuild them and put them back in the NA
