Brake switch is very common problem. Nearly always the cause.

How much to Fraud charge for these? I went through a few on my EL and the wreckers charged $20 each.

In the end I bent up the tabs on either end, where it makes contact with the brake pedal. Worked like a charm.

Quite often the switch isn't the problem.
I've had a cpl of cases where i fitted a new switch and still no brake lights, i then cleaned everything and greased it, still nothing, i removed one of the nylon bushes and bingo... It was stopping the switch from contacting.

If all the brake lights are out, it's probably the brake light switch. On my 96 EF, I had to use a cable tie to stop the brake light switch from rotating and keep it in position, otherwise it would stop working after a while.

You can get the switches from Supercheap for less than $15 last time I looked. Can't vouch for the quality though. Genuine $40+.

Good luck.

I had to replace my brake light switch on my EB Fairmont Ghia just the other day.

My lights were working fine, took the car to Vic Roads to get the defect lifted, as i'd repaired all the defects, then during testing, the damn switch failed. Went to Ford down the street, paid $17 and fit it in the Vic Roads car park, lights working again & defect lifted.

You can test rather easily if it's the switch or the wiring. Just unplug the switch, grab a paperclip, bend it up so you can insert it to join the two terminals of the switch. If the brake lights come on, switch is dead. If not, problem lies elsewhere, such as wiring.

Cheers

ToranaGuy

Should have bought 2, it wont last long.
I bought a cpl of the $6.50 jobs from Bursons, i didn't even get 6 months out of it, they ended up getting some USA made switches for about $12 so i bought one of them, i fitted it and sold the car over 12 months later and still working fine.
In 9 years i would have gone through 6 switches easy.
