power steering fluid in a EL - wat color should it be


i know el uses different type but mine looks like sloppy choclote that cant be normal surely


does the mobil 424 go this way with age or im pretty sure someone has topped up with dexIII

shouldn't it be a reddish colour? or was that only for the EAs? I am pretty sure they are red in colour.

You can use R1-424 in any E series, and 424 looks like really clean light engine oil. Yours is buggered, so flush it out/change it.
I have even used 424 in an XD V8, and no probs. I had to fit an oil cooler for the P/S fluid, because the extractors were only 1/2" from the steering box.

yeah ive got a leak from the pinion shaft so im gonna pull the rack and replace the seals and the fluid

i just was curious wat color the EL fluid was as ive always used trans fluid in the past for my other cars and its always been red

dex II or III up untill around els where they changed to that R1 for longer life span & quieter operation. dextron will still work.

Nothing, seen it done heaps of times. R1-424 came out in the EFII in 3/96, the same time as when the dropped using auto dipsticks.

heh u think brown is bad (well brown sludge plus iron fillings in my auto box..) but my powersteering fluid is pretty worse, image leaving ur oil in for (negine oil) 20,000 and then dropping it... imagine how black it is... thats my powersteering fluid when i got my el fairmont.

will take a pic of it tomoz and post it up, i saved it.

and yes my new EL fairmont, has had a tough life, my poor baby!!

just drain it and get some lucas transmission stop=leak, that s**t is gold...it will plug any leaks you have and get your wheels turning like your car is a brand-spanker

id actually like to fix it properly - ive tried those stop leaks b4 and while some work and some dont they almost always are only a temporary fix at best and the leak will return normally worse or clog the system totally

ive even been told to add a 1/2 cap full of brake fluid to the p/s fluid by a mechanic - this will supossedly "cure it"

well, like you said you are going to re-build the rack so that will fix your leak and you are correct, the proper fluid (cant remember the name of it to save my life atm) should be a nice reddish colour

i dont think so --i think u will fnd thats trans fluid for the 4 speed autos but hey wat the fuk do i know

power steering recommended for the EL series is

mobilfluid r1-424 or
CASTROL SYNTRANS 75W/85

automatic transmission fluid is the same hydrualic oil as the power steering system... which isn't all that far away from brake fluid as far as hydraulic capacity goes.

I think you'll find ATF a lighter fluid than ISO 68 Hydraulic fluid.
Brake fluid is usually a polyglycol base and will attack the rubber used in hydraulic hose for oil.
