Hey guys I serviced my car a few weeks back using 15w40 penrite fully synthetic and since then the oil pressure gauge reads low when the car idles (warm, in drive stopped etc).
I don't know what was in it before this oil but should I be worrying about this or not? |

oh yeah i forgot about that.
1998 AU fairmont i6 275000km. (Runs great) Edit: Actually the torque converter seems a little rough sometimes wanting to stall |

Hold on, I thought synthetic oil is generally just better?
All I want to know is if low oil pressure is harming anything. |

aslong as its not in the red at idle and raises with rpm its ok...

It beeps occasionally when in drive stopped (500 rpm) and raises with rpm and will sit just past half way while moving.

its on the borderline of a big maybe.... i would try something different just to feel safe..

higher viscosity then? 20w-50w?

Penrite (IMHO), is a good choice, but, go 20-50W in anything over 200,000 kays.
Sounds like your oil pump is having trouble keeping up pressure. A slightly heavier oil will compensate. As stated, using full synthetic in an old engine is wasting cash. OK for a brand new performance engine, but, wasted on an older one. Shouldn't do any harm, though. |

That oil used to be semi-synthetic & then they changed it to full syn. At first this was ok because the price was the same, now it's gone up. Though still pretty reasonable for full synthetic oil.
au's are specced to run 30w oil iirc. 40 is already over, 50 could pick up some oil pressure but it sounds like something else is wearing out which isn't unbelievable for that amount of kms. heavier oil will keep it going but you might want to start on a contingency plan.

There are two things wrong with post. first is thinking penrite is good. second is make the generalization that anything over 200 000 should have 20w50 in it. Some one must have forgotten to tell my 260 000km old AU ute that it shouldn't run 5w30 oil.

im running 5w40 in my au with 260'000km,no oil pressure problems and yes its penrite hpr5..
ive been using penrite for years. |

I used 5W30W in my new AU as well, wasn't Penrite but I used Penrite 5W30W in my AU I XR6 and have never had any trouble. Ford recommended 5W30W when the AU fist came out then change to 10W30W and now have changed back to the 5W30W.
