Isn't the timing meant to be BTDC?

Might be worth checking whether TDC on the balancer is actually top dead center. Put a dial guage or shaft down the spark plug and rotate balancer with a socket and see where it reaches the top.

If the head has been machined or there is carbon on the pistons, that could be a cause. Mine pinged on 98 octane on hot days when under load after shaving a lot off the head (it was bent like a banana).

You could also try the Autolite 985 spark plugs, they eliminated the pinging in mine, a bit hard to find though. I found the NGK XR6 plugs to be good too, but not as effective as the Autolites in getting rid of the pinging.

I'm running LPG (it's about 102 octane) now and the NGK plugs and no pinging at all.

At worst case (if nothing else works), you could try a taller head gasket and cleaning the piston tops while your're in there.
