I have a 95 ef falcon, which currently confusing the life out of me . i no i have a small power steering oil leak somewhere and it hasnt really been an issue yet, so before i had a long trip i topped up all my oils etc before i left about 40 minutes of driving smoke was bellowing out from the bonet and my steering went stiff i pulled over and had no power steering oil at all , filled it again and the same happend on the way home 40 minute trip no power steering oil , the confusing part is my temp gauge does not move when the car is smoking and when i drive short distances i dont seem to lose fluid but still get alot of heat under the bonnet but still the gauge doesnt move , any ideas what it could be guys or anything i could check to give you more information?
thanks

by the sounds of it you have a dodgy power steering switch and thats where it's leaking from the smoke is caused by the oil out of the power steering hitting the exhaust manifold.

power steering switch is about $23-$24 from bursons or about the same from supercheap repco etc

i have no idea mate i have never replaced one supposedly the switch is down on the rack, no point spending $300 and replacing the rack when you can spend $24 and save ourself a s**t of work.

And yes you can continue driving it just go get a bucketload of atf fluid and you should be fine (gearbox oil is the same s**t as power steering fluid so will do the trick)

Could be the switch. Should see it easily from underneath and on top. Easiest is underneath.

Hopefully you will have the same fun i did when it power seering fluid poured out onto my shirt and also into my mouth. Fun times. Real s**t to get stain out as well. Normal degreaser didnt work.

You need a thin spanner, pic included.

Area that says thread with the arrow shows where the spanner has to get into. Cant remember the size atmo

Could be the nut or union join of the high pressure hose behind the power steering pump.

Have a look at the power steering system and have a look where the leak is coming from. Most common places are behind the power steering pump at the union join/nut or the power steering switch. You can easily tell if it's the nut/union join of the high pressure hose if you have fluid stains all over the drivers side of the engine bay/underside of bonnet.

Have a look before you start buying parts.

If your going to drive it, atleast take your power steering pumps belt off. The last thing you want to happen is have it seize up and you'll need a new one :/ will be a pig to drive but hey, atleast your not running a risk then.

these use a V belt on ea-ed and our ef's upwards use a single flat belt, they have different pulleys, ea-ed have v shaped pulleys for the belt to run in and ef+ had flat pulleys with little grooves in them
for the flat belt to run in, ea-ed have a separate belt for the p steer, i think they have 3? somone else can confirm how many

The best way to find the source of a leak is to clean the fluid off the whole power steering system with brakeclean or parts cleaner spray - it will leave everything clean and dry. With the car up on stands, start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. At the rate you are losing fluid, you should be able to see some leaking. Trace the leak back (up) to its source. A telescopic mirror ($5 at supercrap) is really handy for getting a look at all the impossible to see spots.

I found two leaks on my EF this way: an o-ring on one of the hose connectors going into the back of the power steer pump, and throught the centre of the pressure switch. The EF pressure switch commonly fails, and there are several run-downs on Fordmods with pics of how to change it (use Search - I'm too lazy to look it up). It's a pain to do, but buy a cheap spanner and modify it per the pics, and it'll make the job so much quicker and easier.
