So I took the car to get a blueslip and it was knocked back due to a leak on the rear main seal... Not happy. I never had a single oil drop on my carspace but when I mentioned that he got offended and told me it was 'dripping on his forehead'.

So in the end, I'll need to get that fixed... he obviously offered his services and quoted me "at least $900 because I'll need to remove the gearbox". Now, don't get me wrong, I'll have this fixed. But $900 to replace a seal (that I'm guessing costs like $40)????? I thought it was incredibly expensive but to be honest I have no experience with this kind of thing, so maybe the hole is deeper than I thought.

Am I just a massive cheapskate or that can be done for a better price? Can anyone recommend me a place?

use engine stop leak, i did and mine hasnt leaked for about 6 months. Also get under the car and clean the leak. Afaik its a expensive job due to the labour involved so his price probably wasnt far off.

Yep biggest cost of it all would be labour.
Bottle of stop leak and get under it and scrub it spotlessley clean.
Around the corner from the blueslip place when you take it back for reinspection pull up , jack the side of the car up and give under the bellhousing etc a quick wipe over.
If it doesnt drip when he is inspecting it it cannot be failed.

you may not need to, as i said i used it 6 months ago and no leaks. Only thing is you need to put it in each oil change.

do-able yourself. just a bit of muckin about takin box out and back in. can be done in 1 day.

i have always been a little hesitant on putting any stopleak in any part of my car. as i think it would stick to everything not just the hole blocking it all up. i could be wrong does someone actually know how much it clogs the system.

$900 is a lot for that job.
Autodata repair times guide says 4 hours to 'R and R' the Auto trans, plus a little time to run the flex plate off and replace the seal and core plug.
Add in the cost of the seal and core plug and maybe some top up for the trans plus coolent if you choose to have the core plug done too

You're looking at $400 to $600ish for the job depending on labor rate and actual cost of the parts and if you choose to do the core plug as well.

Like has been said, if it's not dripping it's not a fail.

d&j's Lithgow is an authorized Ford dealer. They quoted me about 2 years ago to do a rear main on a 5L Nc around $350, they told me if the leak was from the sump gasket it would cost around what you were quoted. Now D&J's are in butt f**k Lithgow and I would expect the price to be cheaper in Sydney. If the stopleak doesnt work for some reason I would not expect to pay anymore than what tickford_6 has said.
By the sound of it too I would go to another bloke for the blue slip, seems like he is more after some extra cash than doing a proper job and will find something else to pick on your next visit.

True. But he has already gave me the list of what needs to be fixed so I doubt he would add more now since that would mean he didn't do his job the first time. Then again, nothing would surprise me at this stage...

Providing the fail paperwork has been written up for the blue slip they are only allowed to check what is on the list they have failed it on during the second inspection.
They cant start going over it again to fail what they have already passed.
