gday all just after ideas on a replacement motor for my brother 97 xh ute as it went BANG.

In my opinion, Au S2 low K motor, with a modded sump, and run the accessories and manifold that is on you blown motor.

If you did the swap yourself, would be less than 600. Allow 250-300 for the AU motor, 150-300 for the modded sump, and 100 odd for associated gaskets and hoses.
Just swap the dizzy gear for the gear on the AU cam sensor and bobs your uncle. Done correctly you could have it done in a weekend as well.
