Hey all, after being told it was going to cost $1400 to get the head gasket changed and the head sent to town to get tested etc... I did decide to ask around.. Basically IT is the headgasket thats gone, at first i thought it may have been the oil pressure sender but its definately the headgasket that is F***. After 200,000 this is this cars first head gasket change

Ne way i went to 3 other mechanics in the area and they all said the headgasket shouldnt cost any more than $700. Which is great, and if it did need testing in twon then it might only be about $300-$400 more.

One other place said they could also work the head at the same time, but said its probally not worth it as i may loose drivability.

So yeah $700 is the official price.. Which im alot happier about. Its only going to cost me $550 for the change over of the rack and pinion steering. However i also got told thier was no point in doing this as its not that bad. (im only adding about 50-80mls every fornight or so). The top up bottle usually last me 3 months.

So yeah im putting that off for now.

But basically im happier now with the fact that the head doesnt really need to be tested unless when they visually inspect it, they find something wrong.

Just a question thou, will i loose driveability if i get the head worked, im guessing they shave the head, port polish etc. Or is this just pointless?

Any input would be appreciated :)

Cheers

Andrew

I would recommend not getting the ports worked. There just isnt much to gain unless you have a massive cam and drivability can suffer depending how it is done.

If you add up the parts to get it done:
$40 for new head bolts (which they may not use)
$40-100 for the head gasket depending on type
$50-60 to re-face the head

Thats assuming its just a basic head gasket job (no cracks and no major corrosion on head). The rest is labor.

$3-400 to test the head seems a bit rich. The last head I had tested was $75 for pressure test and clean and that included taking off and reassembling the rocker gear. It was a 4cyl so I would say $100 for a 6cyl would be more to the point.

Shaving the head was another $50 and small welds were about the same.

Dunno but $3-400 seems rather steep, unless that was a full rebuild.

i would buy all the bits yourself first,,they put a rediculous mark up on the parts they buy.

if the head isn't sent off for testing, then i doubt you will get any sort of warranty on the job.

1st off......$550 for the rack....is that brand new?? or reco? and fitted or just supplied??

2nd....Im gettin my head done for $950 with no labour and a full reco head....new bolts...radiator...the works....all at cost price....but I was quoted by everyday mechanics that it would cost $600 to $800 if it was only the gasket needed changing.

And $1300 to $1500 with a full reco head and then the s**t of them having the car for 3 - 7 days. Where as where im gettin it done is only going to take less than a day(he's tryin to beat his record of 6 hours).

So me personally, $1400 depending on what they are actually including isnt that bad...

Back to you rack....if you want a full reco one with warranty let me know, $190 inlcuding gst...and if you in melbourne fitting and wheel allignment for $150. So $340 all up. Big diff.

I would say, get the heads ported, these guys dont know what theyre on about. Whilst your paying, may as well get a little bonus for your trouble.

OK, lets see who really knows what they are talking about :)

What does a stock head flow?

What is the diameter and volume of a stock port?

What is the diameter of the intake manifold runners and the primaries of typical headers?

What does a ported head flow?

How much does it cost to port a head?

What sort of gains will you get with a ported head?

Sorry buddy, can't answer your questions, I dont watch SBS or the discovery channel like you. But whilst this fella is paying the dosh, it wont hurt to get the heads ported and polished whilst they are off anyway, so he can throw in a cam one day as well.

else he has to pay a s**t of labour to get the heads on and off later. Why pay twice? Use your head, the guy with the questions probably uses his head for a car stand.

See, you dont know what your talking about.

Thats where you are wrong. Porting will reduce low end performance so unless you have a BIG cam to make up for it at the top end it will hurt. Check out this graph:

Image

The head with the blue line (which is my head) got minimal port work, basically a clean up. Notice how it flows much better at low lift. The pink line is from a flow test from another forum members 'ported' head. Even with a massive cam (>550 thou lift) you would lose power by fitting the ported head even though is has a higher flow rating.

Well Mr 4.9 Futura, why would they say don’t do the port and polish to the heads if it costs a few bob more when the heads are off anyway. They are ridiculous, that’s the perfect time to get them done, avoid paying the labour.

They don’t know what they are on about.

Lets get 5 E-series falcs, all same spec, weight etc, ill port and polish my heads, lets see why wins down the quarter. That probably wouldn’t work either as im the better driver as well.
