i've got an 95 ef futura 5sp manual, and occasionally the smartlock and econ (economy mode on auto transmission) light comes on while driving. the revs drop to 0 and then the light goes out and it goes again. any ideas? :?:

errr ... earthing problem with BEM maybe???

I had issues with Smartlock in my XG (EB/ED pretty much) ... and found it was an earthing issue with the BEM ... it just immobilised itself and wouldn't start again at all

Check for loose connectors, and the INST. BATT. fuse.

Also the dome light (and int. lights fuse) are part of the smartlock system. check them.

It's a b**ch when you turn up to a FordMods cruise and find in a Maccas car park when you are ready to leave that the bastard doesn't start ... and I had to get a tow-truck the tow the bastard home ... oh well.

that explains the smartlock light - but what about the econ light? that's the one that's got me confused!

I HAVE THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!! (1993 EB Series 2 wagon)

When driving - revs drop to 0 - then smartlock light comes on and stays on (solid - not blinking) aswel as the orange light to tell you you've left your lights on - after about 2-3 seconds car regains revs - orange light goes off - smartlock stays on - and I can continue driving!!

Only 1hr ago - same thing happend, and then for a second time. The difference with the second time was that the car died alltogether!!

Can ANYONE help PLEASE!!!???

Go to an auto electrician ... and let them know your are having issues with Smartlock immobilising your car while driving (damn dangerous in my opinion).

From what I have heard lately it seems to be a common thing with bad earthing of the BEM.

Better to get it checked out ... then causing an accident.

Knowing them ... at least $50/hr ... and a mobile guy will charge a call out fee as well ... best to take it to a place you know and trust.

Diagnostics takes the time ... and that's where the cost is.
