Has anyone had their starter motor make a clanging noise like banging 2 bits of steel together before?

It just started doing it the other day. Im hoping its only a dodgy starter motor and not flywheel damage.

It goes away once the car starts.

Did your noise go away once the car was running?

Hopefully its not loose clutch or flywheel bolts.

Gearbox is heavy.

It does sort of sound like its coming out and slamming back in. I'll jack it up tonight for a look if the rain goes away.

Hopefully it's that simple.

It wasnt loose.

The starter doesnt look any different.

Any ideas if I should just replace it and hope for the best or should I look elsewhere?

Turns out my flywheel is missing a tooth.

Does anyone know why this would have happened?

Do I need a new flywheel?

one tooth or more? if its one i wouldnt worry bout it just yet untill it gets bad or you need to take your gearbox off for some other reason. like clutch or wateva.

Would you do the same if it was an $1800 clutch and flywheel?

it will get worse... every time the starter hits the missing tooth the next tooth is copping a hammering.. so unfortunatly sooner or later the starter moter gear will or the next tooth will go..

i would be asking mal wood about warranty??

Mal wood in particular oed666 from boosted falcon are going to sort me out with a new ring gear.

I don't need a new flywheel. Yay.
