Ok so my car has been "leaking" coolant at a rate of say 500ml per week.
The reason I put "leaking" is that sometimes after I drive it the coolant has gone from say half full to just above the full line. I can see coolant dribbles down onto the transmission. Why or how does it keep filling up. |

If your checking the coolant b4 you drive then after it's warmed up the level will increase as the coolant expands when hot.

True. Why did I forget that. Doiyyy.
Another question. Im running the standard thermostat. 95degree of something. Everytime I drive down my road I get to a certain point the temp. Gauge gets to the l in normal then goes down no where it usually sits. Would a 83degree thhermostat fix this? |

I would think that a cooler thermostat would make it run further down the gauge, i put in a 70 something and it wouldn't get up to the area at all so i put a hotter one - i think 80 something and it just sits on the L but if it has a hot thermostat it would only make it worse by putting a cooler one in unless its not working at all.

with the coolant leak onto the transmission, theres a welsh plug at the back of the motor that can leak, also the metal heater hose pipes run across the back too. might be worth checking. but it doesnt explain how the coolant level is going back up again????
might be worth replacing the thermostat if u havent already, might be a sticky one |

leaking onto the trans? could be the back of the head gasket gone?

Yea I think its the head gasket.bugger.
Thermostat is fairly new. |

that'll explain the temp going up to L and then dropping quickly. my first car, a Holden Camira, did the same thing. but only once just after start up. and it had a blown head gasket. but i just sold it for $100 and bought a XF Fairmont

How does a blown gasket cause that tho?

Nah runs fine.
1st gear change it seems a bit strange. But nothing out of the ordinary. |

All engines temp goes up while thermostat is closed then when it opens the temp drops as the system equalises with the now warm coolant from the engine with the cool water from the radiator.

Went and got some seal-up by cargo product today. Its supposed to stop leaks in gackets radiators hoses and cylinger heads. Seeing its only a small leak I hope it'll work.
See how it goes tomorro. |
