strange noise out of ef fairmont

my father inlaws 96 ef fairmont ghia with 105,000kms is making a strange knocking sound from in the drive line sumwhere but only when it is in gear and idling...not in park and not when driving,and it only seems to be when its hot...the gearbox is working fine no slipping or hesitating....any ideas?

could be the exhaust hitting some thing

Could be the bolts that hold the torque convertor to the flex plate are loose, this is/was a common problem, I had the same thing, 10 mins on the ramps fixed it..

I'd say it was the exhaust hitting the floor pan or something under there maybe have a look underneath while its making the niose or jack it up, get some gloves on and grab the pipe(maybe do it when the pipes cold) and see if you can mimic the sound by moving the pipe left/right up/down.
