im pretty sure injectors make a slight tick normally, my ef was ticking real bad and it turned out to be the lifters, all the seals on em were rooted.

Probably a redundant question but have you checked the oil level and condition of oil. Any sump damage?

Hydraulic lifters get all rattly when your oil level gets too low (I'm pretty sure the EF has hydraulic)

If the lifters are stuffed then you may as well put a new cam in your engine while you're replacing the lifters. Don't bother getting them refaced or anything like that.

I think they're about $8 each new or $5 to get them refaced.

Yeah those little lifters tend to stuff up easy for most due to there oil condition it's always best to change your oil on a regular basis I change my oil when it;s starting to blacken.

The head doesn't need to come off. Tappet cover off rocker gear off. but be carefull as the lifters may fall out you can get lifter kits they won't need refacing try repco or wade cams for the kits. They are a little plastic clip fairly easy to fit.

Dirty oil can cause a ticking, try changing your oil and filter.
