hey everyone. my car is starting to make ticking noises when i start her up. sometimes the ticking is there until the car gets to normal operation temperatures and sometimes the ticking is really loud during start up for a couple of seconds and then just dissapears completely. this all happened when i decided to give her a bit of gas and got the needle to get to about 4500rpm and a puff of smoke was left behind me but not thick cloud. was white/grey yet u can still see through it. noticed when i looked in my rear view mirror and the hyundai behind me drove through it.

what could be the problem here? is it cam, lifters or something? easy fix for someone like me who is trying to learn through a gregory's manual?

try using a different oil. I use a 15w50 oil on my 3.9 and it has never ever ticked. And the 3.9 has the worst reputation for it as well

Sure sounds like the lifters... I know from Mitsu engines using a heavier oil will quiet it down abit. However I am not sure you want to be running a higher weighted oil and what impacts it will have on the rest of your I6.

ohhh okai. i was scared it might be the lifters :S

i havent changed the oil before on this car  due to the fact that the oil looks quiet clean.....very clean i must say. i have that magnatec stuff at home that my dad bought.....car is due in for a service so ill give her a service when i get the chance.....if it still occurs after changing the oil and oil filter that means its most likely the lifters?

hard to change these?

Try a different weight oil as one of the measurements of weight (eg. 15W40 - can't remember which one) is an indicator of how quick the oil pumps round on start up - so if you haven't got a noise once its warmed up, then lifters should be alright.....thats my guess anyway

yeah no noise after a while. i checked the oil and it seems to be toooo clean? and it seems thinner then the oil i used to use on my EA so im not sure if this guy just put the wrong oil in. either way im going to pull the rocker off and stuff to see if anything is wrong.

cheers everyone

grechie thats what mine makes but ones the oil settled in it stops doing tick tick noises but the car starts to idle rougher.....in N and P it hunts for idle speed but in drive it sits still and idles rough. weird

lets just hope my lifters are fine
