Hey everyone.

Today I was giving my car a check, and i came across a ticking sound from under the bonnet at idle. I have located the approximate area of the sound, and it appears to be coming from near the fuel rail, at the third cylinder from the front, near the injector. It doesn't seem to change much with more revs, and im at a loss as to what this sound could be. It doesn't seem to be affecting anything, but i wanted to make sure it wasn't going to harm the engine. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot,

GazzaED

Is there a reason why this injector might be ticking and the others aren't? I've been getting pretty poor fuel economy, maybe I should run some injector cleaner through it.

instead of spendind $10 on injector cleaner, run thru abt 5 tanks worth of optimax/vortex or better yet ultimate, $2 bucks extra a tank. and that should clean any light build up, reset the computer while runnin premium. with regard to poor economy i don't know.

Could be a hyrdolic lifter? Try some Nulon Lifter Treatment.

injectors do make a faint ticking noise, which is normall, maybe one of the lifters is sticking a little. usually is one of thoughs two things.

thanks for the info guys, I do run it on premium vortex 98 all the time, but i will try some injector cleaner then some lifter stuff as well. It doesn't seem to be affecting things too much, so i'll see how it goes. Thanks for the replies anyway guys, i'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, in an LPG setup, there is a valve type thing - I can't remember what it's called, but it is hooked up to your converter by memory, with vacuum lines, and does make a ticking noise when LPG is running. If you shake it, I think there's a check ball inside, similar to a PCV valve, I think it runs off a vacuum pulse. You should find the ticking noise is more so in LPG than in petrol mode.

It only costs $80 to $120 to get injectors cleaned and flowed properly...Get a big screwdriver hold it where you think noise is comeing from and hold your ear to it..A hose will do similar job...That way you can locate noise better..
I'd change your oil if it's nearly due...Suspect timing chain / tensioner also...The PCV is close to #3 also?? Check that?
As said...

When I went loooking to buy an EF Fairmont I noticed this ticking noise coming from the fuel rail and thought it might be a problem. But after looking at about another 5 EF/EL I noticed they all made this noise from the sixes. I was told this noise was normal and was part of the fuel injection operating. Theres a big difference from this noise to a noisey lifter though.
